Sublingual
So many of us who are hypothyroid have low stomach acid. This means we are not able to absorb through our stomach as well as we should. This means medications, nutrients from foods etc. are not absorbed as they should be.
A fabulous option is to take your NDT and or T3 sublingually. This means letting it dissolve under the tongue or in the cheeks.
There are two glands that you can use in your mouth to take your NDT and or T3 sublingually:
The Sublingual gland: This is directly under the tongue, and also the major salivary glands. Because of this, there is more saliva to liquify your NDT and or T3 and results in a faster absorption of the hormones through the capillaries under your tongue.
The Buccal Gland: This is in the mucous membranes that line your cheeks, because there is less saliva in this location, it takes a bit longer to absorb the NDT and or T3 this way. This is an option though!
Many makers of NDT and T3 state that their medications are not made to be taken sublingually. While that may be true, we have found that it not only works, it works magnificently!
All NDT’s can be taken sublingually, but the softer ones seem to be easier to break down; those are NP Thyroid by Acella (available in the US) and Erfa (available in Canada). The other ones have a harder coating on the outside, and some find that breaking it up some with their teeth and placing the pieces under the tongue or in the cheeks works even better. What NDT works best with the sublingual method?
If you take your NDT or T3 sublingually, you may eat and take most supplements right away. Any of the following should be taken at least 2 hours away from NDT or T3:
- Iron supplements
- Calcium supplements
- Estrogen (in pill form)
- Beta Blockers
If you choose to swallow your NDT or T3, you may eat and take most supplements right away. Any of the following should be taken at least 4 hours away from NDT or T3:
